Philadelphia City Paper Internship
Current Openings:
This program is unpaid, as this is 2013, but many of us were interns ourselves not that long ago, and we try to pay you back for your grunt work as much as humanly possible. For example, we insist that you leave CP with at least one (paid) longer freelance piece, if not more, and one of the two days a week you come in is specifically dedicated to teaching you stuff.
This is how it works: You come in and do some fact-checking for about a four-hour shift on either Monday or Tuesday, then Fridays we get some pizza and a staff member or other person of journalistic interest comes in to talk about pitching, freelancing, hustling, not pissing off your editors by accident — the for-real stuff about doing writing as a career that you may not get in school. Internships last for about three months, give or take a couple of weeks.
The Application:
This application is to be copied, filled out, and e-mailed to City Paper's arts editor and intern wrangler Emily Guendelsberger at ten.repapytic@gylime. Rolling consideration, but we operate on a vaguely semester-based schedule — please mention in your email whether you're interested in winter/spring, summer or fall. If you make the second round, we'll be in touch to set up an interview and an in-office fact-checking test when we start looking to recruit a new batch of interns — that's usually in mid-August, mid-December and mid-May.
Thanks a lot! Looking forward to meeting you!
1. TELL US A STORY
Everybody's got that one insane story they can dine out on; tell us yours in 300-400 words. If you haven't racked up anything appropriately epic, just tell us something funny that happened this one time. This is a judgment-free zone.
2. WHO ARE YOU?
What's your name? Who are you? Are you interested in the news, A&E or food internship? Where are you from? What's the Philly connection? Where do/did you go to school? What is/was your major? What do you love to write about? Do you have any video/photography/technical/miscellaneous skills or areas of expertise we should know about? When you go out, what do you do? Where do you go? What are you hoping to get out of this?
3. PROSPECTIVE A&E INTERNS ONLY: GIVE AN OPINION
(News skip to section 4, food skip to section 5.)
Pick one thing from each column and tell us in 150 words why you like or dislike the artist or movie. Be as specific as possible, and there are no right answers—this isn't about whether your tastes and ours match up, it's about how well you can express yourself (and entertain us).
3A. Artists:
(Food, skip to 5. A&E, skip to 6.)
4A. What's a story going on right now in Philadelphia that you think isn't being covered enough (or well enough), and how would you cover it differently if you were a staff writer at a paper? Tell us in, say, 300 words.
4B. ...And what's another one? Same deal, but in 100 words.
4C. NOW LIST YOUR TOP 5...
(A&E and news, skip to 6.)
5A. Describe in 150 words either the best or the worst thing you have ever eaten.
5B. NOW LIST YOUR TOP 5...
Places you go for
What's your availability weekdays? And when are you hoping to start?
7. BONUS POINTS
Feel free to link to your clips, photo galleries, vimeo accounts, twitter feeds—whatever you think will help us make up our minds. (We'd particularly like to see clips.)
Again, send this application back to ten.repapytic@gylime for consideration! Thanks.
