When I was reading about sports writing, I liked how Jackson included the aspects of sports writing that we might not think about--social media presence, conducting interviews, and analyzing different statistics, as well as forming relationships. There are always aspects of a job that we don't think about, or we might not understand until we actually do the job. I think with the rise of technology and social media, journalism jobs are becoming much more interactive and have so many more components than ever before. I actually considered becoming a sports writer because of my love of sports and writing, but also because of the odd hours. Since there are a lot of night games in sports like baseball, basketball, and hockey, I thought if I decided to have kids that I could be with them during the day and get them from school, then go to work at night. Of course, there would be a lot of travel and I wouldn’t be with my family at all during that time. But I like to travel so I never thought I would mind it.
I also thought Rob’s post was really interesting. I always thought it would be hard to be a technical writer because you really have to understand the product in a complex way in order to be able to explain it in a simple way. This can be difficult if you’re trying to explain a complicated machine or something in a field with which you are unfamiliar. I was really surprised that the top end of pay for technical writers was over $100,000. I never thought a writing job where you weren’t famous could make you a pretty good living. I was also surprised that most of the job doesn’t involve writing. I always picture a technical writer in a basement somewhere slaving over a small-print manual, but a lot of the job is interviewing and being in meetings throughout the product’s development.
